The Ferret, Preston
Doors 7PM
Described by BBC Radio 2 presenter Mark Radcliffe as “the Stevie Nicks of Folk”. The south-west based singer/songwriter Alex Hart has just released ‘VISIONS’ her most exciting and anticipated album to date!
At 18 Alex was noticed by producer Neil Stainton who honed her talent, worked with her during her early career and co-wrote and recorded her debut album ‘On This Day’.
Alex also worked closely with musician and songwriter Barney Dine from Torbay with whom she co-wrote many songs from this album, songs afterwards and gigged extensively. During this time, she was able to grow as a musician and perfect her craft.
From this she collaborated with electronic duo Electronic Youth on a cover of Angie Stones’ “I Wish I Didn’t Miss You” which had huge global radio success reaching No.2 in the Music Week Dance Charts and was supported by Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1. This recognition spearheaded a run of high-profile festivals performances and a slot opening for UK folk sensation Turin Brakes at the Lyme Regis Folk festival. Alex’s opening performances landed her two record deals, as she was quickly snapped up by US label OK!Good Records and Right Track Records UK. Alex started working with Grammy Award winning songwriter and producer Terry Britten (famous for “What’s Love Got To Do With It” for Tina Turner) and went on to release the single ‘Life Saver’.
Following the success of Alex’s debut album, her voice and musicianship caught the eye of legendary Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre, who asked Alex to be a part of his band as a musician and vocalist for their European and international tour dates. Alex has performed and toured all over the UK/Europe with the band and has embarked on many international US tours.
Alex also collaborates and performs alongside the critically acclaimed Devon born folk singer Seth Lakeman. Alex’s voice as well her multi-instrumental playing features heavily on his brand-new album. The single “Higher We Aspire” received huge BBC Radio 2 support, and Alex performed the song live on BBC Breakfast TV. Alex tours extensively with Seth as a duo, trio and part of the band. Keep a lookout for gigs across the UK.
As well as a busy touring schedule, Alex is constantly working on new music ready for new releases in 2024, including her new album ‘VISIONS’ which has just been released alongside a successful UK tour.

A few false starts later, the current line-up of Hey Pixies started intensive rehearsals. 6 months later the gigs started and were enthusiastically received.

Crywank, Manchester’s own folk-punk celebrities have truly captivated fans across the globe with their genuine but playful melancholy.
Having played shows all over the UK and Europe to the US and Canada, the 2 and sometime 3-piece (made up of Jay Clayton on vocals and guitar, Dan Watson on drums and occasionally Jules Noel on bass) are well known for their astute commentary on existential fears and the idiosyncrasies of the disillusioned millennials and Gen Z folk who relate to Jay’s words. The band had planned to break up in 2019, booking an extensive farewell tour that got interrupted by Covid. They completed the tour after a hiatus, then announced in 2024 they were no longer breaking up, much to the relief of their fanbase, many of whom have connected to the band during their most formative years.
The music is beautifully controlled, a well measured balance of delightfully delicate anti-folk with lyrics and delivery that bring a clear emo influence, and moments of heavier, chaotic release that are cathartically punk. Jay’s voice cuts clear over simplistic finger-picked chords, that layered with the extra instrumentation, becomes so three dimensional, metamorphosing, climbing out of the window of it’s acoustic bedroom beginnings, sneaking off into the night, maturing into the pillar of the genre Crywank’s music has become.
The Ferret was recently one of the early gigs on Crywank’s spectacular “16 cities in 24 hours” world-record-bothering feat. Completing this adventure on a shoestring budget, pulling favours from friends and keeping things DIY, they really demonstrated not only their own skill as a musician, but also represented the drive, passion and abilities of the DIY music community as a whole, who work tirelessly every day with little financial compensation, and are capable of delivering incredible shows all the time.

TICKETS ON SALE FRIDAY 12TH JULY
Forming in 2019 and consisting of Kingsley Hall on vocals and Robbie Major on synths and noise, Benefits quickly evolved into a highly politicised group that aims to merge noise, hardcore, hip hop, industrial rock, electronica, and an angry twitter feed to get its point across.
A resolutely DIY outfit they have managed to gain fans as diverse as Sleaford Mods, Steve Albini, Black Francis, Garbage, Billy Bragg and Elijah Wood as well as getting significant features in the NME, Rolling Stone, the Guardian, and the Quietus.
In 2023 they released their abrasive debut album “NAILS” on Invada Records which garnered significant critical acclaim as well as numerous album of the year nods, most significantly from Louder Than War magazine and BBC6music.
An inspiring, loud and formidable live outfit, they aim to keep the momentum going from their debut as they prepare to release the follow up.

Curtis Eller’s American Circus
Curtis eller’s American Circus
Thursday, 17th October 2024
The Ferret | Preston
Doors 7PM
Curtis Eller is a banjo player, songwriter and rock & roll singer. The lifelong show business veteran began performing at the age of seven as a juggler and acrobat, but has since turned to the banjo because that's where the money is.
His band, Curtis Eller’s American Circus, has developed a devoted international following based on spellbinding stage performances that combine a dreamlike vision of American history with silent film style, physical comedy, and explosive rock & roll energy. The iconoclastic troubadour has spent twenty-five years relentlessly touring the clubs, theatres and festivals of North America, Europe, and Australia.
This October Eller will return to the UK for a limited run of club dates, backed by a heavy-hitting, four-piece lineup of The American Circus featuring musicians from both sides of the Atlantic.
The tour celebrates their release of their new album, "Another Nice Mess." The recording captures the band in their ragged, retro splendor, as they guide listeners through a sepia-tinged world of tightrope walkers, heavyweight brawlers, Hollywood scream queens, firing squads, fallen soldiers and conscientious objectors. At the heart of the forthcoming set is ‘Another Nice Mess': A sweet, sentimental waltz about the enduring friendship between Laurel & Hardy.
You are invited to run away with the circus when this little big top comes to town!

“The Dream Machine are one of my favourite bands. They bridge the gap between pop stars and psych punks effortlessly. Small Time Monsters is an incredible album.”
- James Skelly, The Coral
Following recent support shows for The Coral, The Lathums and The Charlatans, The Dream Machine open for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds at his massive Cardiff Castle gig on Wednesday July 17th (alongside The Big Moon).
Following that, they will play a hometown album launch party on Saturday 20th July at The Jacaranda Club. Small Time Monsters is out this week on Run On/Modern Sky. It features the singles Frankenstein and Cindy’s Eyes alongside nine brand new songs, each of them a psychedelic story of everyday life set to the kind of indelible melodies you’d hear blasting out from the milkman’s radio.
Small Time Monsters cements the Liverpool band’s reputation as one of the country’s most consistent and compelling young bands. Small Time Monsters was recorded at Kempston Street Studios, Liverpool and was produced by Chris Taylor and James Skelly (The Coral).

For many all-time-great rock bands in the ascendant, the fourth album is often the point where youthful years of febrile creativity and progressive momentum culminate in a masterwork for the ages, setting the seal on an early signature sound while opening it up to future possibilities.
From enchanting 2016 debut Prelude, through 2018’s assured II: Sojourn, to 2020’s wizardly III: Pentecost, each Wytch Hazel album has embodied that old-fashioned notion of unstoppable progress, and the glittering treasure chest that is IV: Sacrament proves eminently worthy of rising to the toughest challenge. Not just the Lancashire quartet’s most classically beautiful production, but their strongest yet front-to-back collection of affecting hooks and ageless melodies.

Nashville Pussy with Takeaway Thieves
Madhouse Promotions Presents:
Nashville Pussy
With support from Takeaway Thieves
The Ferret | Preston
Tuesday, 5th November 2024 | Doors 7PM
"Nashville Pussy are one of the bands that saved Rock N Roll" (Duff McKagan)
Legendary Rockers Nashville Pussy from Atlanta Georgia debuted in 1998 with LET THEM EAT PUSSY, the record was picked up by major label Mercury and the song Fried Chicken and Coffee was nominated for a Grammy for Best Heavy Metal Performance touring with huge names such as Motörhead, Slayer, Lynyrd Skynrd and ZZ Top.
Formed in 1997, Nashville Pussy preached its sleazy gospel over the past couple of decades alongside MOTÖRHEAD in every rock outpost from Asia to Europe and back again.
Raised on a diet of Marshall stacks, Gibson Guitars, Jack Daniels, and weed, Nashville Pussy are the bastard offspring of foul-mouthed, demented hillbilly ice-cream man Blaine Cartwright and tractor-driving, nude art school model, and guitar prodigy Ruyter Suys. Nashville Pussy quickly gained a reputation for being like “AC/DC with a female Angus” in Ruyter’s blues-meets-punk frenzied guitar solos and Blaine’s hilarious “jailhouse nursery rhyme” lyrics.
The band’s bass player — Bonnie “Bon” Buitrago — began as a teenage fan of the band sneaking into shows, determined to make the leap from audience member to member of the band by mastering her craft on bass. Atlanta native and ex-landscaper Ben Thomas on drums has quickly become known for his showmanship, precision, and all-around sensuality behind the kit.
“We are rock ‘n’ rolls’ dirty little secret — blissfully outliving musical trends we never knew existed,” says Suys. “More than ever, everyone needs to escape to a place where they can pretend they don’t give a shit, let their hair down and get loud, sweaty and dirty. Nashville Pussy provides that unpretentious refuge. Everyone is welcome — just don’t dress up ’cause it’s gonna get messy.”
The Gods of Rock smiled upon on Nashville Pussy in creating the band’s brand new studio album, “Pleased To Eat You”. Combining the talents of producer Daniel Rey (Ramones, White Zombie, Ronnie Spector and Raging Slab) and studio engineer David Barrick (Black Stone Cherry, The Kentucky Headhunters, Marshall Tucker Band), the band was fresh off an international tour and hungry for new songs to sink their teeth.
“Pleased To Eat You” is their seventh studio album and certainly another milestone recording by the band you’ll need to share with your mom: Bourbon, BBQ, horse farms, good people, and a great fucking record. Seriously, you’ll hardly find a band that manages to act so easy, so fast and yet so impulsive as Nashville Pussy — a band that is not shy about expressing opinions loud and clear.

Dirty Laces over their career have played countless sold out shows in their hometown at prestigious venues including Gorilla, Salford Lads Club and Deaf Institute. Leading to their billing at major festivals around the UK making the lineup for Kendal Calling, Sound City, Wheels and Fins, Hardwick Festival and more.
With this traction behind them the band have been invited to open up for some legends of the music industry such as Inspiral Carpets and Pete Doherty and have had their single ‘You’ remixed by Loz Colbert (Ride, Charlatans).
Their music has not fallen on deaf ears, they have been championed by 6 Musics Chris Hawkins finding themselves played on national airwaves frequently alongside local stations such as XS Manchester whom they played live on air for in the past.
Sonically the band take inspiration wide and far from iconic predecessors like Pink Floyd, Joy Division and Queens of the Stone Age. Their debut album 'Blink For Nothing' offers a wild, unapologetic ride through ethereal atmospheres whilst maintaining the bands raw authenticity.
With the release of their eagerly awaited debut album, 'Blink For Nothing.' Independently crafted over six years that hit the airwaves on November 24th, 2023 the band have blossomed into maturity only looking forwards.

Barrow born indie rock band The Silver Bars started making waves on the local circuit with their electric live sets and unorthodox covers. The release of their original music has seen them go from strength to strength since, amassing hundreds of thousands of streams.
The bands most recent release ‘Modern Features’ saw them tour nationwide, playing to sell out crowds as well as joining the Kendal Calling & YNOT lineups along the way. With new music imminently in the pipeline, as far as the North West is concerned, they are certainly ones to watch.

Have we ever needed great storytellers so badly? Voices to snap us out of our collective grey funk, to pull us out of our narrow, hemmed-in worlds and to lighten our days and enlighten us with their perspectives, Immersing us in their worldview and history. People who can make us laugh, cry, gasp or nod sagely, to see our world anew and not feel so alone. We need stories, vignettes, new windows to look out of, and narrators to help those new visions make sense.
In short, we need Scott Lavene. Born and raised in Essex, but a man of the world who has wandered far and wide, Lavene’s a storyteller who can capture all the madness, joy and frustration of life while singing about worms writhing in the ground. Lavene’s been in bands since his teens, but only really located the voice that makes his new album Milk City Sweethearts so remarkable – that combination of wry observation, humble wisdom, unguarded vulnerability and unpredictable humour – in a music workshop for alcoholics and addicts, long after he’d bid farewell to childhood dreams of pop stardom, and the ghosts and demons that accompany those dreams.
With his stories, Lavene makes us all feel a little less alone – he’s that voice in our ear who always has a tale more weird, more tragic, more funny than our own, but in whose experiences we can see our own. Laughter, tears, madness and redemption reside within this magical songs, the full spectrum of existence. You’d be a fool to miss out.
"A master storyteller." Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music.
"A delicate balladeer with Robyn Hitchcock's surrealist flair" - MOJO
"Any 'best albums of 2019' lists that don't have Scott Lavene's 'Broke' near the top are bullshit" - Dangerous Minds
"Sounds like an updated version of something that Stiff records would have released in the 70's." - Steve Lamacq
"Think Baxter Dury's warped kid brother." - The Times

GLC celebrates the 20th anniversary of their debut album 'Greatest Hits'. 20 years, 20 shows, 20 songs, 20 quid.
Guns don't kill people, rappers do. Ask any politician and they'll tell you it's true.
Safe. Stick on your leisurewear and get out of your Gaffney. The original nutters GLC hit Preston for their 20th anniversary. With heavy street accents and loads of slang-slinging, comedy rappers Goldie Lookin Chain are proud to be lazy sods from Newport, Wales.
CHROMA -
Influenced by the likes of Yeah Yeah Yeah’s and The Gossip, CHROMA have already received a groundswell of early radio support from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, Kerrang! Radio, Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru and ongoing support from BBC Introducing.
Tracks on their formidable debut variously reflect on the band’s collective experience growing up in the South Wales Valleys, and explore the myriad lived experiences of young women. Exploring infighting within the feminist movement, the oppression of trans right in the UK, violence against women, and other weighty topics, they ultimately invite the listener to a place of safety and empowerment.

Tuesday Night Whites with The Height + Cottons
The Ferret Presents:
Tuesday Night Whites
With support from The Height and Cottons
TUESDAY NIGHT WHITES - Forming in Preston as a result of some lock-down blues, Tuesday Night Whites are a five-piece Indie Rock band who have taken the local scene by storm.
Basing the name of their beloved Preston North End, the band started off as an energetic acoustic duo, raising the roof in jam-packed clubs and bars. Since then, they have evolved into five, selling out their first headline hometown show in under 24 hours.
After a couple of memorable support slots, Tuesday Night Whites took to their first headline gig outside of Preston, selling over a hundred tickets pre-door, catching the eyes of people all over the Northwest… all without an official song release. Their catchy, energetic indie anthems inspired heavily by the likes of The Snuts, Catfish and the Bottlemen and Oasis led to their first release, The Renegade.
With belting vocals and immaculate instrumentals, a song about standing out from the crowd and making your own mark on the world seemed the perfect fit for this bands first official release. With an incredibly loyal fanbase and their ecstatic anthem-like tunes, Tuesday Night Whites are definitely ones to keep your eyes on.
THE HEIGHT - A teenage Salford band that sing about what they know. The band is comprised of John Denton - Vocals, Guitars, Songs, Brandon Greenhalgh - Bass & Ted Ellis - Drums
COTTONS - A four piece band living in Manchester, playing a familiar indie sound with melodic verses & driven chorus’. Consisting of Ricky, Jasper, Jack and Charlie, Cottons began by meeting at Uni.

Second Cities - When Emo and Metal collide you find the most cathartic experience for anger and sadness. are precisely that blend of sadness and anger finding the melody buried in aggression. Tackling difficult situations such as Grief, Betrayal, Depression, Anxiety, Pain and Jealousy to find solace with their fans, Second Cities build a community of misfits and outcasts who need a place to feel comfortable and appreciated. "If you're going to see the emergence of a new great band you'll see them at This Feeling first." - Carl Barat
TICKETS: www.skiddle.com/whats-on/Preston/The-Ferret/The-Juice---Preston/39159252/
The Juice is five northern lads, dishing out scally rock with a sweet pop sheen. Backed by BBC Introducing Lancashire, after landing a slot performing on BBC 5 live on Scott Mills’ & Chris Stark's Saturday morning show the lads have gone from strength to strength. This success has resulted in playing the Isle of Wight and Y NOT? festivals as well as a sold out tour with This Feeling.
Although initially inspired by the many great bands of North West England, the lads are finding their own space with the influences each member brings to the table.
Their first release as a band, 'Tell Me Tina', landed BBC airplay, as well support from Amazing Radio and countless other grassroots stations. With their latest release 'Rip It Up' turning heads, and with countless sold out gigs from word of mouth alone, you'd be a fool to sleep on The Juice.

Conscious Pilot was founded by Joe Laycock and Jack Sharp as a successor to theatrical punk group Cheap Teeth, the pair birthed the project from their joint love of immersive, beat-driven soundscapes and an exploration of subtle shifts.
After recording the debut EP ‘Epoxy Plains’ in their native West Yorkshire, the pair moved to Glasgow and enlisted the services of acclaimed producer Chris McCrory (Catholic Action) and guitarist Emmy Leishman (Big Girl's Blouse).
The group will be releasing their follow up EP later this year, off the back of their latest single ‘Me & Marcel'
The band aims to urge the listener’s ear into progressively choppy waters whilst simultaneously grounding them in firm lyrical soil.

Part Chimp + Sly & the Family Drone + The Bear Around Your Neck
The ferret presents:
Part Chimp + Sly & the Family Drone + the bear around your neck
Friday, 2nd August 2024
The Ferret, Preston
Doors 7PM
Part Chimp have made it their business to shake speaker-stacks, fry brains and induce jouissance and tinnitus alike across the UK.
PART CHIMP:
In the psychic wastelands of the 21st century, one particular sonic force looms large. Transcendental like the malignant force that fuels the zombie movies of lore, Part Chimp have made it their business to shake speaker-stacks, fry brains and induce jouissance and tinnitus alike across the UK.
"Part Chimp are masters of us all” - The Quietus
"This isn't a return to form, merely a continuation of an already extremely high one” - Drowned In Sound
“Part Chimp aren’t about machismo or terror, but the simple joy of ridiculously loud noise for its own sake. Drool finds them tightrope-walking the thin line between clever and stupid as brilliantly as ever.” - The Guardian
---
SLY & THE FAMILY DRONE:
Working with a sound palette of scronked electronics, bulging noise blasts, wailing sax & Kalashnikov drums, the band digs deeper than ever to find increasingly potent sonic pockets.
Like many classic noise bands before them, Sly & The Family Drone choose to play on the floor of their venues whenever they can. There’s a different "atmosphere, environment and dynamic" when they’re up close to people and surrounded by amplifiers.
THE BEAR AROUND YOUR NECK:
“The Bear Around Your Neck are A psychedelic grunge garage rock two piece hailing from Manchester.
Surreal, ethereal, pulsating and sometimes demonic. Heavy Guitar picking and fuzz riffs drenched in melodic vocals, carried on tessellating drums.
Fronted by Nathaniel Scott guitar/vocals and Jay Temple on drums. For fans of Satan.” “Oddball psych songwriter.”

CADAVER BEACH:
Cadaver Beach are a four-piece Alternative-Rock band from Preston. Formed in 2022 the band are quickly gaining a reputation for their energetic live performances and are starting to make waves on the North West music scene.
The band's lineup features four talented musicians who share a deep passion for creating music that resonates with their audience. The incredible soaring vocals and machine gun rhythm guitar playing from lead singer Freyja is complemented by the sonic mastery of lead guitarist Kian whose intricate guitar riffs and soulful solos add depth and intensity to the band's sound.
. . .
WYCH ELM:
Bristol’s three-piece wych elm were formed back in 2017 when Caitlin Elliman and Jack Hitchins were attending college together. Throughout secondary school and college they found themselves sharing mutual interests such listening to Pixies and reading unusual literature. Together they create an atmosphere of Hitchins' feed-backing squalling guitars, heavy drum fills and punchy bass accompanied by Elliman’s haunting lyrics and howls. They conjure menacing and contemplative grungy indie rock with a touch of the macabre.
