MF WEEKENDER

The Ferret | Preston
---
Hi, my name’s Matt. Like many people, I missed a significant birthday due to the pandemic (in as much as the passing of a certain date can be deemed significant). I also started managing The Ferret around 1 year ago. To mark these 2 milestones, I’ve taken over The Ferret’s calendar for a full weekend of THINGS I LIKE. I hope some of you like some of these things too, and maybe you’ll join me at a celebration of BEING ALIVE. There are full weekend tickets, there are also individual day tickets. Take your pick & I’ll see you down the front.

To buy tickets for this event please visit our events page: MF Weekender - FRIDAY with Justin Robertson, Tirikilatops & more tickets from Skiddle.
>> JUSTIN ROBERTSON:
One of my favourite DJs of all time, and an unparalleled party starter - veteran DJ, producer, remixer, label boss and perhaps the best dressed man in techno - Justin Robertson heads to The Ferret for a guaranteed top drawer DJ set.
JR’s love of riffy, dynamic records that are primitive, primal and visceral result in epic sets that are as memorable as they are pleasurable. Expect a hypnotic trip through the dimensions from outsider acid and deviant disco, through to bold electro funk and muscular techno boogie.
>> TIRIKILATOPS (live):
Avant Garde surrealist electro k-pop! YES! The wonky strangeness that is the spectacular, colourful, infectious Tirikilatops, beams down to planet Ferret. Utterly adorable, eccentric in the extreme, and over-loaded with sing-along earworms, and dance-along nuttiness.
>> VANITY PROJECT (live)
Matt Bruce aka Vanity Project, brings us an exclusive look at his brand-new live set. Spaced out house & disco, melding tight rhythms to rubbery synths and a hint of acid.
Plus, we’re joined by a selection of my favourite local disc jocks & producers. You can’t beat this line-up…
>> SIMBA - Preston’s number 1 vibe provider. The effervescent Simba concocts warm sample-based house infused with influences from jazz, the OG sonic trailblazers of Chicago and Detroit, and golden age Hip Hop stylings.
>> BOLTS - Bolts promises to deliver anything from soulful house & disco floorshakers through to proper weirdo techno & “fucking loads of jungle”.
>> LEYLAND TRAXXX - BoR boyz Bail and Hindle, specialising in slow and sleazy techno, acid, disco and EBM.
>> NODDING DOG DISCO - Paul NDD kicks the party right off with a bag of joyful disco delights to wag your tail to.
Saturday (4pm - 1am):
SWEET RIFFS & IDIOSYNCRATIC GUITAR CHOPS
A mega line-up of slightly-psychedelic indie-rock bands:
BULL
CHEAP TEETH
MOON & THE BEAMS
SUGARSTONE
GRANFALLOON
PEAK LOW
To buy tickets for this event please visit our events page: MF Weekender - SATURDAY tickets from Skiddle.
>> BULL
Having spent their formative years sharing music and developing a mutual love of Pavement, Pixies, Yuck, Dinosaur Jr and the “guitar-heavy, artistic rock music” that had come from the more lyrically-minded end of the ‘90s American indie spectrum, there’s an audible ease to the way the four work together that comes from having devoted - for some of them - almost half their lives to doing it., Bull have also sharpened a knack for the nuances of the genre too: cleverly needling melodies that’ll stay in your mind for days, and pretty harmonies that sweeten every riff. Having honed their live chops playing with the likes of Squid, The Orielles and Spiral Stairs (Scott Kannberg of Pavement) they’ve become a music force to be reckoned with.
>> CHEAP TEETH
Cheap Teeth’s aim is to write songs that are in equal measure structurally, and lyrically experimental as they are accessible. They are a band inspired by the dark cracks in the places they have lived, namely Edinburgh, Leeds and London. The late 70’s nightclubbing extravaganza is fronted by Joe Laycock, who’s vocal performance ranges from raspy Russian-novel-inspired rambles to pristine, room-filling howls. This is backed by growling, anthemic licks from Josef Ash, grunting basslines that feel both refreshingly self-assured and gorgeously wonky from Jack Sharp, all protected by drummer Sandy Short, who journeys the jauntily swinging listener along to what SO YOUNG zine described as ‘a snotty garage rock tsunami’, seamlessly immersing them into his world with icily locked in punk rhythms.
>> MOON & THE BEAMS
We welcome slightly-psychedelic (“slightlydelic”) four piece Moon & the Beams - lead by David Shurr. Mixing grunge and folk, underpinned with eastern melody, Moon & The Beams are reminiscent of The Doors, Jeff Buckley, & Deep Purple. And as a live experience, they're a force to be reckoned with.
>> SUGARSTONE
'𝘼 𝙉𝙀𝙒 𝙒𝘼𝙑𝙀 𝙊𝙁 𝙉𝙀𝙒 𝙍𝘼𝙑𝙀' - New-wave synth revivalists Sugarstone could be described as an amalgamation of all your favourite eighties records but with a modern indie-pop twist.
“The long shadow of Depeche Mode, the industrialism of Nine Inch Nails and the pioneering, soldering-iron-happy innovation of Cabaret Voltaire are three elements in the adhesive that binds the four-piece’s creative initiative.” - All Music Magazine
>> GRANFALLOON
Granfalloon is the principal project of Richard Lomax, a Manchester-based songwriter and producer who has been constantly creating since 2003. Lomax weaves his oddball elements into a larger soundscape by working with a full band, creating dreamy songs and cinematic soundscapes.
"Lomax is one of those artists that will persistently and consistently produce music of excellent quality without compromising for the benefit of mass appeal. This is art (without wanting to sound pretentious) and art sounds good." - Listen With Monger.
”Utterly enchanting" - Crack Magazine.
>> PEAK LOW
A stately indie solo artist from High Peak UK - FFO Radiohead, The Cure, Nick Cave, The National and Interpol. Formerly head of highly respected Ghosts of Social Networks, Peak Low has had many plays across BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 music, Radio X and BBC Introducing Manchester. BBC radio supporters include Huw Stephens, Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson.
"an embracing sound" - Steve Lamacq
"A rip roaring take no prisoners track" - Tom Robinson
>> PLUS, WHINGE DJs and SUNDHOLM bring you belting tunes galore between and after the bands.
